Order by These Dates: Christmas Delivery for Custom Route Maps
When to order a custom route map for Christmas. Honest production timelines, wood base tips, and November-friendly deadlines.
Article
Custom gifts do not behave like Amazon Prime.
That is the entire holiday problem in one sentence. A PrintMyRoutes sculpture is made from someone's actual GPS line — printed, finished, and (if you choose it) set on a wood base — which means it needs calendar space, not a overnight-shipping coupon.
Good news: if you are reading this in late October or early November, you still have a comfortable path to Christmas. If you are reading this in mid-December, keep reading anyway — we'll be honest about what still works and what doesn't.
The honest production picture
Every piece is individual. We build topography from route data, you approve a digital preview, then we print and finish. Typical shipping windows land in days to weeks depending on size, finish, wood base, and how busy the queue is.
What that means for Christmas:
- Order in November for stress-free delivery and time to wrap without panic.
- Earlier still for bulk — families ordering several pieces, teams, or coach gifts need extra runway for proofs and quantity.
- December is possible but tighter. Cut it close and you trade calm for tracking-number anxiety.
We would rather tell you that now than watch you refresh a shipping page on December 23rd.
Order-by dates that actually help
Use these as planning anchors, not miracles. Exact cutoffs shift with demand; the principle does not.
- Early November: Ideal. Full finish options, wood base, time for a preview revision if you want one, buffer for weather delays.
- Mid-to-late November: Still strong for most single gifts. Lock the GPX and approve the preview quickly.
- First week of December: Possible for many orders if you move fast and keep the design simple. Confirm current lead times when you order.
- After that: Ask before you promise. A beautiful gift that arrives January 4th with a handwritten note can still land — but only if you set expectations.
If you are buying for a known Christmas morning reveal, November is your friend. If you are buying because you just remembered Uncle Dave's Boston qualifier, message us with the route and we'll tell you what's realistic this week.
Why the wood base matters for holiday gifting
Holiday gifts get opened in living rooms, not gear closets. The wood base is the premium, display-ready upgrade: the sculpture leaves the box looking finished, not like a craft project waiting for a stand you forgot to buy.
For Christmas specifically, that matters. Nobody wants to explain "we'll mount it later." They want it on the mantel between the stockings and the photo of last year's race.
Budget-wise, pieces typically land in the $40–$120 range depending on size and options. The base is the upgrade most gift-givers choose once they see the preview.
What to prepare before you hit order
Holiday stress shrinks when the inputs are ready.
- The route file or race name. GPX from Garmin or Strava, or a well-known event course we can build from.
- The story. Which year, which distance, any finish time or label you want on the piece.
- Ship-to address that will actually be staffed. Vacations and campus closures wreck otherwise perfect timelines.
- A decision on the wood base before the preview, so you are not renegotiating the gift on December 10th.
Export guides help if you're hunting the file: start with Garmin vs Strava GPX export. If the runner is secretive, ask for the activity under a harmless excuse — or use a published course and make the personalization about the date they ran it.
Bulk and family orders
Three siblings each getting their own marathon. A coach ordering for a graduating senior class. A couple who both raced the same weekend.
Those orders are some of the best Christmas gifts we make, and they need earlier starts. Multiple previews, multiple addresses, and one shared deadline will eat a calendar faster than a single piece. Aim for early November — or sooner — and tell us it's a holiday bulk order up front so we can sequence proofs.
If you miss the comfortable window
You still have options.
- Order now and give a preview printout with a note: "Your route is in production — arrives after the holiday." People remember honesty paired with something real.
- Give a PrintMyRoutes gift plan they redeem with their own GPX in January — still personal, still theirs.
- Pick a simpler finish and a known public course to reduce back-and-forth.
Do not invent a fake tracking number. Trail people can smell that from a mile away.
Christmas morning, the route on the shelf
The best holiday gifts for runners, hikers, and cyclists are the ones that prove you were listening. The Boston hills. The ridge they won't shut up about. The first 50K. Sitting on a wood base under the tree — or arriving with a note that says it's coming, and meaning it.
Order while you still have runway. November you will thank December you.
