You know the person you're shopping for. They own four pairs of trail shoes and wear one. They have a watch that tracks their sleep, their stride, and their soul. They got a vest last year, a headlamp the year before, and a gift card they still haven't spent.

Buying gear for someone who obsesses over gear is a losing game. You'll never out-research them. But there's one thing they will absolutely never buy for themselves — and it's the thing they'd want most.

The route.

Why gear gifts fall flat (and what actually lands)

Gear wears out. Socks get holes. Nutrition gets eaten before New Year's. None of it says anything about the person who received it.

Now think about what your runner actually talks about. Not the shoes. They talk about mile 21, when their legs went hollow and they kept going anyway. They talk about the climb at sunrise, the switchbacks that never ended, the ridgeline where they finally stopped to look around.

That's the gift. Not more equipment for the next one — proof of the one they already finished.

Give them the terrain they conquered

At PrintMyRoutes, we take your athlete's actual GPS data and turn it into a 3D printed topographic sculpture. Every ridge, every valley, every brutal climb — rendered exactly as they lived it, with their route traced across the surface.

It isn't a generic medal hanger. It isn't a poster of a mountain they've never stood on. It's their route, at their scale, sitting on the shelf where visitors will ask about it — which, let's be honest, is the whole point.

Pieces start at $40, and no two are ever alike. [INTERNAL LINK: see how custom route sculptures are made]

What to give, based on who's on your list

The first-time marathoner

Their first 26.2 changed something. Print the full course — Chicago, New York, St. George, a hometown race nobody's heard of — and put the finish date on it. This is the gift that ends up on a desk at work.

The ultra runner

100 miles deserves more than a belt buckle in a drawer. Ultra courses have the most dramatic terrain of anything we print — the elevation profile alone tells the story of the darkest hours of their year. [INTERNAL LINK: ultra marathon gift ideas]

The thru-hiker or peak bagger

A section of the AT. A Colorado 14er. A stretch of the PCT that took three weeks and rearranged their priorities. Long trails print beautifully as a series, so this becomes the gift you can build on for years.

The cyclist or gravel rider

Big rides deserve a big landscape. Gravel routes and mountain passes render with punchy relief — the kind of piece that makes someone lean in and trace a climb with their finger.

The one who's done everything

Ask them one question: "What's the route you're proudest of?" Then print it. If they don't have a race, print the loop they run every morning, or the trail where they proposed, or the mountain their family climbs every summer. The data doesn't have to come from a start line to matter.

The wood base: where a gift becomes a keepsake

Every sculpture looks sharp on its own. Add the wood base and it becomes something else entirely — display-ready the moment they open the box, no shelf styling required.

The warmth of real wood against the crisp topography is what turns the piece from a cool object into a finished one. If you're gifting, we'd take the base every time. It's the difference between something they'll set down and something they'll set out. [INTERNAL LINK: explore wood base options]

How it works — three steps, no guesswork

  1. Send us the route. A GPX file, a Strava link, or the name of the race. If you're shopping in secret, we can work from the event alone.
  2. Pick your materials. Choose your filament color and decide on the wood base upgrade.
  3. Approve the digital preview. You see exactly what the piece will look like before anything gets printed. No surprises, no "hope it turns out."

Then we print, finish, and ship it — ready to wrap.

What people ask before they order

What if I don't have their GPS data?

You don't need it. If you know the race and the year, we can build the course. If it's a trail or a summit, the name is usually enough. Surprise gifting is most of what we do in December.

What if they've never run a race?

Plenty of the best pieces we make aren't races at all. The neighborhood loop they've run a thousand times. The canyon they hike every fall. The pass they rode with their dad. Meaning beats mileage.

How big is it, and where will it go?

Sculptures are sized to live on a shelf, a mantel, or a desk — substantial enough to notice, not so large it needs a wall. On a wood base, it reads as a finished object rather than a hobby item, which is why so many end up in offices.

Is this worth it over a gift card?

A gift card gets spent and forgotten by February. A route sculpture is still on the shelf in five years, and it's still the thing guests pick up and ask about. Starting at $40, it's a lot of meaning for the money.

Order in time for the holidays

Every piece is made to order, one at a time, which is exactly why it's worth giving — and exactly why it can't be rushed at the last minute. Holiday orders should be placed by [INSERT ORDER DEADLINE] to arrive before the 25th.

If you're reading this in early fall, you're ahead of nearly everyone. Get the route now and be finished with your hardest gift of the season. [INTERNAL LINK: start your custom route sculpture]

For race directors and run clubs

Planning finisher awards, volunteer gifts, or a thank-you for your board? We produce bulk commemorative pieces of your course that people actually keep. Ask about event pricing and holiday lead times before the calendar fills. [INTERNAL LINK: custom awards for race directors]

Give them the miles back

They earned every foot of that elevation. The early alarms, the long Saturdays, the miles nobody saw. A sculpture of their route says something a gift card never will: I know what that took.

Pick their proudest route. We'll build it.
