What Size Sculpture Should You Order?

Small vs Large vs X Large custom route sculptures. Desk vs shelf, gift wrapping, and when to add the wood base. Pick the right size in minutes.

Article

You have the route. You are on the order page. And now you are stuck on a question that feels bigger than it should: Small, Large, or X Large?

Size is not about ego. It is about where the sculpture will live, who it is for, and whether you want it to whisper or stop people in a hallway.

Here is a clear decision guide so you can pick once and move on.

The short answer

  • Small — desk, office shelf, travel-friendly gift, everyday PR or local race
  • Large — home bookshelf, mantel, most gift orders, the default "this looks intentional" size
  • X Large — statement piece, bucket-list races, entryway or large wall shelf, when the course itself is dramatic

When in doubt for a gift, choose Large with a wood base. That combination is what most people mean when they say the piece "looks finished."

Small: the desk sculpture

Small is for close viewing. It sits next to a monitor, on a nightstand, or on a narrow shelf where a bigger piece would crowd photo frames.

Choose Small when:

  • The sculpture is for their office and they share a cubicle wall
  • You are ordering a first piece and want to stay at the lower end of the $40–$120 range
  • The route is compact — a 5K loop, a short climb, a neighborhood project they love
  • Gift wrapping and shipping simplicity matter (smaller box, easier under a tree)

Small still shows elevation. You will see the shape of the course. You will not get the same across-the-room impact as Large. That is fine — desks are for the person who sits there, not for guests in the foyer.

Large: the shelf default

Large is the sweet spot for most orders. It reads as art on a bookshelf or mantel without demanding a dedicated pedestal.

Choose Large when:

  • This is a gift for a partner, parent, or close friend
  • The race was a marathon, half, or meaningful trail event
  • You want guests to notice it when they walk into the room
  • You are adding a wood base (Highly recommended at this size)

Large is also the size people reorder in. Once someone has lived with Small on a desk, the next race often graduates to Large for the home shelf. If you know this is "the" race of their year, skip the stepping stone and start here.

X Large: when the course deserves a stage

X Large is for routes with presence — big vert, long distances, iconic events, or a home that has the shelf space to match.

Choose X Large when:

  • The race is a once-in-a-decade finish (first 100-miler, Boston, UTMB, a multi-day stage race)
  • The terrain is dramatic and you want every ridge visible from across the room
  • You have a wide mantel, media console, or built-in shelf that would swallow a Large
  • The sculpture is a shared household display, not a personal desk object

X Large with a wood base is the full premium setup. It is the version that makes people ask where you got it before they ask what race it is.

Desk vs shelf vs gift wrapping

Desk: prioritize Small. Keep cables and coffee clear. Elevation still reads when you are two feet away.

Shelf / mantel: Large is the workhorse. X Large if the furniture is wide and the room is big.

Gifts: think about unboxing. Small and Large wrap cleanly. X Large is still giftable, but plan for a larger box and a moment where they need clear table space to open it. Include the wood base on gifts — it removes the "where do I put this?" problem because the piece arrives ready to display.

The wood base decision

The wood base is the premium display-ready upgrade. Without it, the sculpture still looks great. With it, the piece sits like something you would buy in a design shop — grounded, intentional, harder to knock over on a busy shelf.

Take the wood base when:

  • The order is a gift
  • You chose Large or X Large
  • The sculpture will live in a common area of the house

You can skip it for a personal Small desk piece if you are watching budget. You will not regret adding it when someone else is opening the box.

Matching size to the story

A Tuesday night 6-miler and a mountain 50K are not the same emotional weight. Size can mirror that without becoming a status contest.

Local loop they love → Small is intimate and right.

Fall marathon PR → Large is proportionate.

The ultra that took everything → X Large earns the shelf.

If you are ordering for yourself, be honest about where it will actually sit. An X Large in a box under the bed helps no one. A Large on the shelf you look at every morning does the job.

Color and proof still matter more than millimeters

People obsess over size and then rush the proof. Do not. Whatever size you pick, check that the route line sits correctly on the terrain and that the colors work with the room — dark shelves vs white desks change what reads clean.

PrintMyRoutes sends a digital proof before production. Use it. Size is a one-time choice; a wrong route color is a daily annoyance.

A simple decision tree

  1. Is it a gift? Start at Large + wood base.
  2. Is it for a desk only? Small.
  3. Is it a bucket-list course with space to display? X Large + wood base.
  4. Still unsure? Large. It is the size most people keep ordering.

You are not locking yourself into a lifetime of one size. Many customers end up with a Small at work and a Large at home for different races. Start with the place this particular route will live.

Pick the size. Keep the story.

The right sculpture size disappears into the room's logic — it looks like it was always supposed to be there. The wrong size either gets lost or dominates for no reason.

Choose where it will sit. Match the emotional weight of the route. Add the wood base if anyone else is opening the box.

Then upload the GPX and get the proof. The hard part was the run. The size question is just logistics.
